We welcome your child and you to Balavihar. This year we are planning to conduct two Balavihar classes at the RIACC Hall of Worship. Details are provided below. We follow the Chinmaya Mission’s syllabus for Balavihar. The greatest boon given by Pujya Gurudev Swami Chinmayananda to the younger generation is Balavihar. Balavihar provides a spiritual and cultural orientation to the children of the modern age. The rationale of the Balavihar as elucidated by Pujya Gurudev in the "March of the future” talk is summarized below:
- To train the children and inculcate in them the reverence for our ancient culture, and inspire them to live up to it with correct understanding.
- To create self-confidence to serve and act cheerfully.
- To generate a true affection in all contacts, inculcate personal discipline and a true spirit of leadership.
- To mould their capacity to express and assert their individuality.
- To bring out their dormant faculties and detect defects; cultivate and improve their creative abilities.
- To help children to develop a healthy resistance against temptations in the atmosphere in which they grow.
- To provide an atmosphere to grow with noble ideals, healthy emotions and physical discipline.
Balavihar for Students in Grades 5 and higher:
Timing: 11:00 am – 11:45p.m. (sunday)
The goal of Balavihar for the older children is as follows:
- Bhakti (Devotion): Children will learn to show their gratitude and devotion towards God through various prayers and Bhajans.
- Morals, values, and principles: Books such as “Discover Life” will be used to guide discussions. These discussions are aimed to help children discriminate right from wrong. This ability to make thoughtful choices will help the children of Balavihar through school, college (when they are likely to be away from parents), and life.
- Knowledge of Indian culture: Books such as “Our Heritage” and “Shiva Mahima” (intermediate level) will be used to teach children Indian culture, religion, and mythology.
- This is a new class designed for children attending 4th through 7th grades. The textbook for this class is “Shiva Mahima” from Chinmaya Mission.
Balvihar class for students in Kindergarten to Grade 4:
Timing: 11:45 am to 12:30 p.m. (sunday)
The goal for Bal Vihar children is to learn good conduct, spiritual awareness, cultural and moral values through the medium of stories, arts and crafts, bhajans, slokas and discussion.
The children are encouraged to be responsible, alert and sensitive members of society.
Children will learn from Chinmaya Mission books.
The class format will be as follows:
Children will begin the class with prayers and small bhajans.
The main syllabus this year will be the Balavihar “Shiva Mahima”.
